Making Room for New Possibilities by Marcy Ulrich, Decluttering and Organization Consultant

“Sometimes we need to let go of things in our lives to make room for better things.”

Have you ever heard yourself or someone you know say something like this: “I think it might be easier to just burn down my house than figure out how to declutter it”? It’s a sentiment that many people have felt or maybe currently feel about their homes. When things don’t work at home it can be stressful and overwhelming. Often, the stress can be felt more acutely when you find yourself spending more time in your home, as we all did during the pandemic.

Having someone help you through the process of decluttering and organizing is incredibly valuable. A neutral party can guide you through the process of making your home a place to live rather than a place to store stuff, they can also remind you that letting go of things you don’t use allows for the possibility of those items to be loved and used by someone in need through donation.

My philosophy is that perfection is not what we’re striving for, we work to find a way to live in your current space most effectively for the speed at which you and your family live. We set goals and start with high visibility areas or particular stressful spaces so you can see results right away. At the end of the day, I like to remove all filled boxes and bags so you can see the immediate progress and keep the momentum as we move forward. If you consider everything a container; shelves, drawers, rooms, your home, everything should fit in that container – so keep the things you love and let go of the things you don’t. Through the process of letting go, you open yourself up to new possibilities. Those possibilities can be as simple as spending less time in the morning searching for matching socks to the ability to start a project or take advantage of a new opportunity that you haven’t allowed for because you were stuck and distracted by the enormity of your stuff.

Our homes are our sanctuaries, the space that is comfortable and cozy from all the chaos of the world or, at least, that is what they should be. Using a professional to help get you started and moving forward is a great way to take control of what you might feel is a bonfire waiting to happen. No matter what size home you have or how overwhelming the clutter may seem, there is always a solution and it’s easier to discover with a partner.
