Eat Local & In Season Every Day of the Week!
Completely spoiled by bountiful SoCal harvests from local farms all year, we have checked out many of the Farmers Markets in surrounding communities over the years. I think back to when I moved back to the area after college from the east coast in the mid-1990s – deeply missing high quality produce – and the farmers market movement was unfolding in the San Gabriel Valley, now fully established almost 30 years later. The LA Magazine recently featured a wonderful list of regional markets in an “Updated Guide to Los Angeles Farmers Markets”, and we’ve created our own below. We also recently visited Alma Backyard Farms, an incredibly important organization that has created multiple working urban farms that assist in the transition and healing of previously incarcerated folks while also providing fresh, affordable produce in Compton and San Pedro. Transforming unused urban spaces into small, flourishing farms or farm stands is the next important farmers market movement, especially in areas known as food deserts, where affordable, fresh produce is not easily accessible, explained well by in “Transforming Food Deserts: A Food Justice Tour of South Los Angeles”.
Our mission is to connect people to their homes and communities, and we share the following local farmers markets with you, spreading the word that you can literally get fresh produce from a nearby farmers market nearly every day of the week…enjoy!
